Baseball has a way of pulling you back in
When Oosterhout Twins asked me to join them for the BCL in Regensburg, I was honoured and excited to return to the sport at the highest level in Europe.
As a physiotherapist specialising in the athlete’s shoulder, baseball naturally became a passion of mine. But this past weekend reminded me that working in baseball is about far more than injuries or treatment alone. It is about helping athletes prepare, perform, recover, and compete day after day.
Throughout the tournament, I had the opportunity to support the team both pre- and post-game as a phsyiotherapist and as on-field medical support.
Much of my work focused on pitcher preparation and recovery, helping athletes manage the demands of repeated high-level throwing through mobility work, shoulder and thoracic preparation, soft tissue treatment, recovery work, and monitoring readiness to help players step back onto the field ready to perform again. While much of my work centred around pitchers, it was a privilege to support players across the roster.
What stood out most, however, was the team itself.
I have worked with different athletes and teams, but rarely with a group that brought this level of energy, commitment, and effort every single day. The professionalism, trust, and work ethic but also the friendship within this group were tremendous.
While we sadly did not manage to qualify, I could not be prouder of the fight and resilience shown throughout the tournament. I am incredibly grateful for the trust Oosterhout Twins placed in me to help keep players ready to compete at the highest level of European baseball.
One conversation during the tournament also stayed with me. Hearing how meaningful it was to see more women involved in baseball reminded me that the game continues to grow in more ways than one, and that progress matters across every part of the sport.
Thank you to Oosterhout Twins for the opportunity and experience. Proud to have been part of the journey, and motivated by every opportunity to continue working with overhead athletes and within elite baseball environments.

Kleine kinderen worden groot
Kleine kinderen worden groot, het hart van dit team wordt gevormd door jonge mannen die een groot deel van hun jeugd op onze velden hebben doorgebracht.
Als Twins Rockets en Twins Tigers bij U12 als Cavaliers, Admirals, Bombers en Falcons bij BATC tegen (toen nog) fysiek sterkere jongens uit de Randstad.
Maar vrijdagavond stonden er 6 van hen in het mooiste stadion van Europa tegenover Regensburg en wonnen een ware thriller tegen het thuis spelende Duitse topteam.
De halve finale werd uiteindelijk niet gehaald Draci Brno was gisteren sterker dan Twins maar wat een weekend. Twins liet zien dat het zich kan meten met de Europese top.
Fantastische vangballen van Daan Verpaalen, Railisson Bentura en Axl Poesmans, strakke double plays, 2 Homeruns van Rob Paller en kneiters van doubles van Nando Mostaert en Luuk Bun.
Ook de sterke pitching liet ondanks de druk weinig steken vallen. Als dit een voorbode voor het vervolg van de competitie was, dan krijgen we nog een prachtig seizoen.

Winnen betekent meer als je het samen kan vieren
Afgelopen weekend mocht ik met Oosterhout Twins de Champions League van het Europese honkbal spelen.
Vrijdagavond openden we het toernooi met een avondwedstrijd tegen gastheer Regensburg 🇩🇪. Een zwaarbevochten wedstrijd die eindigde in een 2-1 overwinning voor de “boeren uit Oosterhout” was honkbal van het hoogste niveau. Tijdens de wedstrijd besefte ik al dat ik midden in de mooiste honkbalherinnering van mijn leven zat.
Na afloop doken we, nog bezweet en in tenue direct het publiek in om het eerst samen met onze supporters te vieren. Twinners die uren hadden gereden om ons daar te zien spelen. Op dat moment voelde het groter dan alleen een individu of een team. De trots van een hele club, uit by far de kleinste stad van het deelnemersveld, bracht veel los bij iedereen die erbij was.
De dagen daarna volgden krachtmetingen met Europese grootmachten Parma 🇮🇹 en Draci Brno 🇨🇿. Helaas trokken we hier aan het korte eind maar hebben we laten zien dat we mee kunnen met de top van Europa, en daar mogen we als club enorm trots op zijn.

Dit weekend even wat anders
Dit weekend even wat anders, ik heb me voor een weekend een professioneel honkballer gevoeld.
Ik speelde met mijn clubbie Oosterhout Twins in de World Baseball Softball Confederation – WBSC Champions League Europe in Regensburg, tegen Legionäre Regensburg, Parma 1949 en Draci Brno. Drie van de sterkste honkbalclubs van Europa. Enorm gaaf om ons als kleine club te meten tegen de beste van Europa.
We gingen naar Regensburg als underdog. Niet onterecht. Debutant op het kampioenenbal, zonder nationale titel, als kleinste stad in het deelnemersveld. De kans op winst in de openingswedstrijd werd op 20% geschat.
Vrijdag liep het anders.
We versloegen de Legionäre met 2-1, de host, in hun eigen stadion, voor 1200-1500 eigen supporters. Dit was een wedstrijd die ik nooit zal vergeten. Niet alleen om het resultaat, maar om wat het vertegenwoordigt. Veel van de jongens waarmee ik dit weekend het veld op liep, ken ik al uit de jeugd, waar ik al bijna 20 jaar mee samen speel. Om dan samen op dit niveau te presteren, in het holst van de leeuw, tegen de beste clubs van Europa, en dat samen te delen, onbeschrijfelijk.

“Soms zijn de grootste overwinningen niet terug te zien op het scorebord, maar in de lessen die je leert.”
Afgelopen weekend mochten wij met Oosterhout Twins deelnemen aan de Baseball Champions League in Regensburg. Een internationaal toernooi waarin de beste clubs uit verschillende Europese competities het tegen elkaar opnemen. Voor ons een unieke kans om ons te meten met topteams uit Europa en ervaring op te doen op het hoogste niveau binnen het Europese clubhonkbal.
Als underdogs begonnen we aan het toernooi, maar tegen alle verwachtingen in wonnen we onze eerste wedstrijd van de thuisploeg, Guggenberger Legionäre uit de Duitse Bundesliga. Een geweldige start en een moment om trots op te zijn.
Op zaterdag namen we het op tegen Parma 1949 uit de Italiaanse Serie A Gold en op zondag tegen Draci Brno uit de Czech Extraliga. Helaas hebben we deze wedstrijden verloren.
In topsport stel je hoge doelen voor jezelf en wil je altijd het maximale resultaat behalen. Natuurlijk reis je af naar zo’n toernooi om te winnen. Maar juist op dit soort momenten besef je dat verliezen niet hetzelfde is als falen. Je wint, of je leert.
Hoewel we niet het resultaat hebben behaald waarop we hadden gehoopt, kijk ik met veel trots en dankbaarheid terug op dit weekend. De ervaring die ik heb opgedaan op dit niveau, samen met een team vol karakter, discipline en mooie persoonlijkheden, is ontzettend waardevol.
Dankbaar voor deze kans, de lessen en de herinneringen die we samen hebben gemaakt. Op naar meer. 🙏⚾️

Proud. Energised. And convinced we’re only just getting started
What a weekend it was for Oosterhout Twins at the World Baseball Softball Confederation – WBSC Baseball Champions League in Regensburg.
As Chairman – and as one of the fortunate few witnessing it live – I saw a team step onto Europe’s biggest stage and not just participate, but truly compete.
We arrived as underdogs. Debutants. Representing the smallest city in the field, without a national title to our name. On paper, the odds were stacked against us.
On the field, it was a different story.
Our win against host Guggenberger Legionäre Regensburg was nothing short of exceptional. In a high-intensity, top-level matchup, our team demonstrated composure, adaptability and the confidence to execute in decisive moments. Delivering under pressure, in a hostile stadium, against a favourite – that says everything about the mindset of this group.
And it didn’t stop there.
Against established European powerhouses 1949 Parma Baseball Club A.S.D. and Draci Brno, we showed that we belong at this level. Competing pitch by pitch, staying disciplined, and continuing to push boundaries – earning respect across the tournament.
What stood out most to me:

⚾️ The ability to adapt and grow during games
⚾️ Strong leadership on and off the field
⚾️ A team that truly plays for each other
⚾️ Pride in representing not just a club, but a community
This weekend wasn’t just about results. It was a statement.
A statement about who we are as a club.
A statement about the level we’re reaching.
And a statement about where we’re going next.
We may return without a Final 4 spot, but we bring back something far more powerful: belief, experience, and proof that we can compete with Europe’s best.
My sincere thanks to the players, staff, volunteers, and supporters who made this journey possible.
This is not the highlight. This is the foundation.
